First Friday Artist for April 2017, Joseph Samuelson

Joseph Samuelson Artist's Statement

Some of these paintings are from a series that I began while teaching in Pontlevoy, France.  The others are from a series begun near Montespertoli, in the Italian countryside south of Florence.  Pontlevoy is a small town in the Loire Valley that has an agrarian economy mixed with an architectural history of more than a thousand years.  (There are a few Roman ruins nearby.)

These paintings were begun as abstractions of the buildings and landscapes within close proximity.  It seems that whatever the source of the inspiration, the paintings have a life of their own.  It is a language that develops once you begin to paint and put one brush stroke next to another.  Everything is a response to what is on the canvas, so no matter how much the original source is the beginning, it is not the end.

Joyce Cary, the Irish novelist, described it best.  "How lovely the stuff is when you’ve just put it down.  While it’s still all alive before it dies and sinks and fades.  Paint. Lovely paint."

He goes on to describe the struggle to make a painting, and it is that struggle that I am attempting.  These paintings all have the essence of a place, but if you look closely you would see that I changed what is before me.  I edited the natural world because of the logic of the canvas.  Sometimes it is with forms expanded or deleted, sometimes it is a subtle change of color.  But always it is within the confines of what seems to make, for me, a better painting.  It is best to remember that art sometimes describes in ways that words can't.

Though a couple of works are inspired by towns in the vicinity, all were begun in Pontlevoy or Tuscany and finished at my studio in Stillwater.

First Friday May 2017 Keith Miesel

Artist Bio

Twin Cities-based for the last 40 years, Keith Miesel was born and raised in a farming area northeast of Detroit. He got his first camera, a plastic roll-film box camera, around age 10, using it to shoot pictures of family and friends.  He later attended Michigan Technological University in the Upper Peninsula, and moved to Minneapolis after graduation.  While at Michigan Tech he photographed for the school weekly, the Yearbook and the Winter Carnival Pictorial, and studied photography and film with Professor Joe Kirkish, a Copper Country arts icon who remains a friend and influence to this day.  In the Twin Cities Keith studied with and was mentored by George Gambsky, a Minor White protege’ who taught at what was then the Crystal Bay Art Center, now known as the Minnetonka Center for the Arts.

He has travelled and photographed in Central and South America, Southeast Asia, South Africa, and India.  He has made annual trips to photograph the Boundary Waters of Northern Minnesota for the last 40-odd years, and has partnered with the Save the Boundary Waters campaign to illustrate through photography its unique and precious value.  A portion of proceeds from sales of prints is donated to the cause of protecting this area from environmental threat from proposed copper-nickel mining at the Wilderness Area boundary.

Besides this show, Keith’s work can be seen at his Studio 116 space in the Casket Arts Building in Northeast Minneapolis (http://casketarts.com); at the Northwoods Friends of the Arts Gallery in Cook, MN (http://www.nwfamn.org); and online at keithmiesel.zenfolio.com.  For more information on open studioand other events, or for other inquiries, go to the Contact Information page on the keithmiesel.zenfolio.com site, or email him at keith.miesel@gmail.com.

A bit about the artist:

Adam Swanson

Bikes are locomotion. Bikes are symbols. Bikes are everywhere. My work addresses the future, fragility of the human presence, perseverance of nature and underlying threads of danger woven through societies. There is a deep relationship between art and science. The more we learn about our surroundings, where we came from and who we are, the more likely we will thrive in a universe of endless possibilities.

After 10 years of travel and a few stints in Antarctica, I have called northern MN home since 2009. I paint full-time, am married and a father of two. More of my work can be seen on my website www.adamswanson.com.

All of this work is available for purchase. Please call/text 218-343-4304 or email adam@adamswanson.com.

February Artist of the Month

Photographer

Jim Dahl

I am an amateur photographer and flower gardener.  You will note that the majority of my photos are of flowers.  I photograph intimate looks at the flowers that beatify the world all around us.  Most see the bright splashes of color and seldom take a closer look.  Mother Nature is a brilliant artist that creates beautiful structures in the details of her creations.  My goal as a photographer is to give you the viewer an intimate look at the beauty that is right there, if we just took a moment to look more closely.

My photos are printed on canvas, which I believe gives them a more realistic look.  If you are interested in any of the photos, but your site requires a different size, I can produce them in the size that works for you.

Almond Skraba

Stillwater, MN

I have been painting since I was three years old. I use all acrylic paints and I mix my own colors. I love detailing freely!

Many of the ideas and inspirations for my paintings come from movies, TV shows and books. More recently I have been drawing inspiration from comics and graphic novels.

My dream is to one day become a layout artist for animated movies.

I hope you enjoy my paintings.

First Friday Art Show, With Music!

December’s paintings in the cafe are by Linda Moses. The work she has done this year
represents a return to basics. Linda works primarily in oil and watercolor, & occasionally in ink & acrylic. Inspirations are from the natural world, trees, rock, structure, son Aaron Hagar’s
photography, and the interactions of mountains and waters in the changing skies & light of the Pacific Northwest.

To add to this special event Linda has arranged to have music by An Luan, a traditional Irish ensemble during the art show.

Second Saturday Live Music with The Hypotheticals!

We are The Hypotheticals for lack of a better name idea. We play swingin'  jazz and contemporary classics. Paul Berger began his career strumming a left-handed tennis racket during the Beatles’ Ed Sullivan appearance. A highly-trained classical/jazz guitarist/viola player, Paul plays with the stellar Century Big Band, along-side many renowned guest musicians. He designs his own line of PT Berger Guitars. Lisa Borg is willing to admit she’s been playing the sax and piano for 43 years. She’s a music ed major, was a band director for 10 years, plays lead alto with the White Bear Big Band, guest-conducted the Minneapolis Pops Orchestra, and sings in a women’s ensemble called Harmonia.  Also, she crushes big time on Paul Desmond’s sax riffs. Carol Caouette is not willing to admit she’s been a musician for 51 years. A trained classical pianist and singer, she played "huge famous star" in her childhood bedroom, then on the cover band circuit for a couple of decades. She played with the White Bear Big Band for a dozen years and can be heard on all of her husband’s PBS documentaries. She is principal musician at White Bear UU Church and is working on a rock-opera project with her daughter, Corinne. Steve Goranson has played bass since junior high, providing roots of chords and mostly steady rhythms for 50 years. He’s a founding member of the seminal Iowa City bar bandThe Fabulous Shucker Brothers and was inducted into the Iowa Rock n’ Roll Music Hall of Fame in 2008

First Friday Art Show

Join us on the First Friday of each month as we transform the bike shop into a gallery opening.  We will be serving complimentary appetizers and wine while we introduce our new artist of the month who's work will adorn on the walls of the cafe.

Beth has lived in the St. Croix Valley most of her life. In the past she looked for the flower without blemish, or tried to camouflage the imperfections. Several years ago she turned away from the pursuit of the perfect image. Through her photography she began to challenge the notion of perfect beauty. She questioned the relationship between these standards asking; what defines beauty? And what is perfection? Beth examined how we are influenced every day, from many who would like us to believe perfection is not only to be striven for and prized, but that it is indeed the attainable foundation of beauty. From behind the lens Beth takes a stand against these social discourses, and now strives to demonstrate the exquisiteness of the flaw. Images on display reflect some of the many influences that have shaped Beth’s work, from, familial roles to spiritualism, working with the elderly and those in hospice, to poetry, collage, flowers and the natural landscape, and kaleidoscopes.

Beth would like to thank the fabulous Chilkoot Café & Cyclery for graciously hosting Influences.
